I was already experimenting with facial proportions and I wanted to create a portrait mixing pen and pencil, a new medium for myself. The facial expression shown is supposed to reassemble boredom, a state of mind that inspired me to recreate my own expression.

This piece was inspired by Van Gogh’s Starry Night. I wanted to recreate the swirling movements in the sky with the addition of using modeling paste to further highlight that movement. The painting reflects a diagonal pattern in the grass, stars, and the man himself. Every aspect of the painting is ever so slightly titled so your eyes are constantly moving around.

This piece was inspired by the indifference I’ve encountered in my life. The two different colors with their own hues and shades are contrasted to show the struggle the subject is facing, battling diversity and the challenges of life. For this portrait, highlights and shadows were used to further strengthen the contrast by creating depth within-subject.

I experimented with Van Gogh’s thick brush strokes with the additions of the intense colors he portrayed in his paintings. Using one of his widely used technique, impasto, I wanted to give the same effect in my own painting.

Modeling paste when dried gives texture to a painting. It influenced me to experiment with movement by using the swirls and lines left from dried modeling paste. The patches of brushstrokes reveal the many layers and textures which is contrasted by the uneven surfaces.

This piece was inspired by Claude Monet as the overall impression of colors used brings the painting to life. My use of color ties in with my use of lighting that is represented by the rich tones of green and blue.

wanted to show how I looked and was like as a young child. I wanted to emphasize the feeling of being childish and silly. This piece uses contrast and light pastel colors to convey the theme of childhood. However, the black color in the piece conveys a theme of the darkness of things that may appear light, and reveals that childhood, with all its happy moments, has some unhappy ones.

As a teenage girl, I think that I always have to portray myself as emotionless to avoid being stereotyped as a typical adolescent girl. When I created this piece, I wanted to focus on extreme emotions. I want the viewer to think about a time they were angry, happy, scared, or sad, and how they associate feelings with color.

This piece was inspired by youth, more specifically my youth. I made this piece without much experience with proportions and the use of colors. The youth represents my own inexperience in art.

This piece was inspired by the many different portraits I’ve made. It’s done through combining every medium I’ve used in every portrait to create one where a mixture of mediums creates a blend of colors and depth. The title “Shrouded Sentiment” refers to the uneasy feeling of looking at this piece. It’s as if he’s judging you in silence, slowing turning his head away from you in disgust.

Since the subject was “river” I thought it was only appropriate to use watercolors to express this piece. This piece was made during the autumn season to which I wanted to express that time of year I made this.

Barbara Kruger inspired this piece. I was inspired by Kruger's use of images from the past to create a progressive message. I wanted to portray the abstractness of adolescence.

Going along with my theme of human features, I was inspired to recreate a life-sized portion of my own body using wires to highlight the crevasses and joints of my body. I used wires for this piece because of its ability to bend into any shape with ease.

This piece represents the class struggle between those unfortunate and those who are at the top, above everyone else. The man on the floor is broken, begging the figure above him while the figure is dancing around the man. It’s a political message at how misfortunate isn’t taken seriously and those with power dance around their issues.

I was inspired to create a visual representation of myself as an elder. In my life, I have a strong devotion to my religion, and I visualize myself living long and healthy practicing my beliefs. I tried to recreate as much of my facial features while making changes to show aging.

This artwork is made out of randomly cut CDs, hot glued into the glass cup starting from within and working my way out. It was inspired by a glass artist named Pino Signoretto and his artwork consists of miniature glass sculptures made out of hot glass.

In Asian culture, horses represents a sense of independence and strength. I wanted to express this message through a sculpture by creating a steel wire wrapped around each to form the anatomy of a horse. I decided to sculpt the horse so that it would stand upright to show dominance.

Lydia Hill graduated from Christian Brothers Academy (CBA) and will be attending Howard University, her dream school, in the fall majoring in marketing and says the following about herself.
My name is Lydia Hill. In the bible, Lydia is a seller of purple. I hope to one day, as well, sell things of value. My enrollment in Howard University will put me on the right path to my extensive list of goals. I will be a major in marketing and a minor in dance. With my marketing major I can be the engine that gets a product I care about moving. A minor in dance will allow me to continue my passion. If lucky, the two worlds will morphe in my favor.
I have been dancing since I was five. Three years ago, I joined an intense dance company called Dominique's Dance Creations. That experience taught me lessons in and out of the studio. It has made me into the strong willed and determined woman I am today. My other interests include creative arts, writing, and community service.
